Download and Set a Ringtone on Android

Downloading an MP3 on Android takes one tap. Getting the phone to list it as a ringtone is where people get stuck, and the reason is almost always the folder it landed in.

Step one: download the file

Press Download on any ringtone card. Chrome saves it to Internal storage/Download by default. That folder is fine for storage but Android does not scan it for ringtones.

Step two: move it to the Ringtones folder

Open your file manager, find the MP3 in Download, and move it to Internal storage/Ringtones. If that folder does not exist, create it with exactly that spelling — capital R, plural. For alarms use Alarms, for notification sounds use Notifications.

Step three: select it

Go to Settings → Sound & vibration → Phone ringtone. Your file should appear in the list. On many phones you can skip the folder move entirely by tapping Add, My sounds or the plus icon in that screen and browsing to the file directly.

If the file still does not appear

  • Restart the phone. Android's media scanner sometimes needs a nudge.
  • Check the file is not zero bytes — an interrupted download leaves an empty file.
  • Make sure the extension really is .mp3 and not .mp3.txt.
  • Confirm the file is in internal storage rather than on an SD card, which some phones exclude.

Setting a ringtone for one contact

Open Contacts, tap the person, choose Edit, then look for Ringtone in the menu — it is often behind a three-dot icon. Pick the tone and save. This setting overrides your default for that contact only.

Menu names by manufacturer

Samsung uses Sounds and vibration. Xiaomi and Redmi use Sound & vibration → Ringtone. Oppo, Realme and OnePlus use Sound & vibration → Ringtone with a My sounds tab. Pixel keeps it at Sound & vibration → Phone ringtone. The full device guide walks through each one.
